Install Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) in Parallels

Testing a new application or configurations can be a time consuming task. Using a virtual machine to simulate you production environment will save your valuable time. If you made a mistake or just want to reset your changes throw the VM away and use a working copy.

In this article, we take a look at how to install Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) Desktop and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) in Parallels.

Step 1:Download Ubuntu 7.10 installation CD

Download the appropriate Ubuntu ISO Image from the Ubuntu download site. If you choose „Desktop“ don’t forget to mark the checkbox „Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer.“

Step 2: Configure a Parallels virtual machine

Start you Parallels and create a new VM and Step through the wizard.

After finishing the wizard don’t forget to:

  1. Click on „CD/DVD-ROM 1“ and select your downloaded cd image.
  2. Click on "Network Adapter". Under Emulation select "Bridged Ethernet" and change the Network Adapter from "Default" to a appropriate adapter listed in the combo box.

Start the VM and install UBUNTU. The Ubuntu Installer will guide you thru the necessary steps.
Important: If you install Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) Desktop the installer asks for “Video modes to be used by the X server:” Select 1024*768 ONLY.

Reboot you VM.

If you install Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) Desktop the X-Server may not able to start. In this case you have to edit the xorg.conf. (see http://kb.parallels.com/entry/32/568/ ) ress ALT-F2 to open a secondary test console. Login and edit  the xorg configuration file with 'pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf' using the text editor. Add the following subsection to the section called “Screen” :

If you boot you freshly create VM the system may stop with a kernel panic. In this case set the Boot Sequence to CDROM first an boot from the installation CD again. Type "rescue" at the boot menu

  1. When the installer ask you about the Language, select <Gb Back>
  2. The Ubuntu Installer Main Menu appears, select "Execute shell in /dev/sda1". (sda1 is your root partition)
  3. Enter the commands:
    apt-get update
    apt-get upgrade
    apt-get install linux-386
    apt-get remove --purge linux-server
  4. exit the shell
  5. reboot (don´t forget to change theBoot Sequenz back to Hard Disk first)
